Child Protection

All North Yorkshire schools, including those in St Hilda's Moorland Federation, follow the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Board procedures.  The school will, in most circumstances, endeavour to discuss all concerns with parents about their child/ren.  However, there may be exceptional circumstances when the school will discuss concerns with Social Care and/or the Police without parental knowledge (in accordance with Child Protection procedures).  The school will, of course, always aim to maintain a positive relationship with all parents.  We work closely with professional agencies to gain support for children and their families.  Our full child protection policy and manual can be found in the 'Policies and Documents' section of our website.

Should you have a concern about a child/ren, please speak immediately to the headteacher.

All federation staff and governors are trained in Child Protection.

First Aid

All of our federation teachers and teaching assistants hold a valid Emergency First Aid in Schools certificate.  In addition specific members of staff also hold an accredited Paediatric First Aid Certificate.

Prevent

On 1 July 2015 the Prevent duty (section 26) of The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 came into force. This duty places the responsibility on local authorities and schools to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.  St Hilda's Moorland Federation is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its pupils. We recognise that safeguarding against radicalisation is as important as safeguarding against any other vulnerability.  All staff are expected to uphold and promote the fundamental principles of British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We believe that children should be given the opportunity to explore diversity and understand Britain as a multi-cultural society; everyone should be treated with respect whatever their race, gender, sexuality, religious belief, special need, or disability.  As part of our commitment to safeguarding and child protection we fully support the government's Prevent Strategy.

All staff and governors are trained in Prevent Duties.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Our staff and governors have recieved basic training for awareness of FGM and how to report it.  Please be aware that should we become aware of any concerns for an individual in our care, these will be communicated directly to the police via 101.

Safeguarding in the Curriculum

We cover many of our safeguarding topics through our Personal, Social, Health Education lessons.  These lessons are sometimes discrete and sometimes through everyday conversation with our children.  We also have a number of scheduled events from outside providers to support our safeguarding work with the children.  These include:  CEOP Training for children (and Parents), Childline Recognising Abuse lessons, annual visits from the Police and Fire service and  water safety lessons with the Coastguard Service.  We have regular lessons on E-safety - see our E-safety page for parents.
